Fixed Credits for Tides of Time

Post by Moduvator »

I'm sure just about everyone here knows Attila Héger — the brilliant Hungarian composer behind Tides of Time, DoTF and many many other titles he has worked on at Novotrade. And recently doing his part for remastering the entire score for Ed's newest project!

But if you were to look for his name in the final game credits, you wouldn't find him there as there is only Attila Dobos:

Initially I thought that maybe there was a mix-up or perhaps a name change at some point, but Deep Space Nine actually has both Dobos and Héger credited... That did not add up at all, so I went to The Man himself hoping for some clarification on that, and oh boy — was I in for a surprise!

Long story short: Attila Dobos did the sound programming at Novotrade, he did not write any music. Somewhere during the process, likely given their names, there was a clerical error, resulting in Ata's name missing from the credits. Since this was only discovered after the cartridges were already made, there wasn't much that could be done to rectify that! Needless to say, Héger was absolutely mortified by this, as he recalls, since Tides of Time really was a project he was very happy to work on, and yet they forgot to mention him! Moreover, this appears to have been a complete surprise to Ed just as well as I touched the topic on the official Ecco discord...

30 years later, it is up to the Ecco community to fix this absolute travesty. I therefore present you ROM patches for all the popular releases of Ecco 2 that restore Attila's name in the credits at the rightful place!

UPS has been chosen as the most modern patch format out there that will also automatically verify the ROM checksum as not to allow you to patch a wrong file. You can either use a tool of your choosing, or just leverage the online patcher at romhacking.net: simply drag and drop the ROM and the patch file to their corresponding slots and save the resulting file.

Listed in code boxes are the checksums the corresponding file is expected to have. In case of UPS this will be verified automatically but it still makes sense to check you are patching the right file. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP BEFORE PROCEEDING!
